Hawksbill turtles in Kuwait

In Kuwait, Hawksbill turtles are nesting on Mina As-Zour beach area (average 10-15 per year) as well as on offshore islets Qaru and Umm Al-Maradim. No clear estimation of the nesting population has been established yet about these islets due to several difficulties, not the least of which is accessing the island. What seems certain is that numbers are relatively low but constant. Male and female turtles are encountered in the waters around the islands from May to September and this fact is an indication of mating activity during these times. More, however, shall hopefully be revealed after a couple more nesting seasons.

Male Hawksbill

Hawksbill hatchlings were found on Qaru island in July 2009, proving that Hawksbill females have nested there and there was some successful hatching. KTCP project members were present in both Qaru and Umm Al-Maradim throughout the spring months and have counted nine fresh Hawksbill “pits” (nests or false crawls) on the last weekend of May. No new pits have been noted in later months on Qaru and a new potential Hawksbill nest in Umm al-Maradim was seen on October 6th by a site visit the team made.
