Working with Green Turtles in Qaru and elsewhere in Kuwait

KTCP teams began their research on turtles on Qaru Island in mid-July 2008. Nesting Greens showed up throughout the summer 2008, and the team gathered data on size, sand temperature, distances from the high tide mark, clutch sizes…

Some hatchlings were spotted in Qaru on 30 August 2008 and were directed to the water by the team. Initially, and upon emerging from the sand, the hatchlings took the wrong direction, attracted by the lights of the Coast Guard Station.

On 14 August 2009, David Robinson and the KTCP team flipper tagged a Green turtle who nested on Qaru. She was the first turtle to be tagged by KTCP.

In October 2009, a juvenile Green turtle was trapped in a Power Plant in Kuwait city. The Senyar team of the Voluntary Work Center, members of which are KTCP members as well, rescued the turtle successfully and released it in Kubbar island.

The rest lies in the photos…

Reef Life in Qaru

Qaru is an atoll, or coral island, as some would prefer to call it.

The coral reef around it extends to a long distance and the islet is the favorite destination for divers, snorkelers, fishermen and campers from Kuwait. The beaches of Qaru provide nesting grounds for Green and Hawksbill turtles, but underwater, in and around the reef, a vibrant marine life unravels its secrets to whomever is willing to look closer. And listen.
